How to Manage an Overbite

Posted on 11/25/2018 by Clay Keith dds
How to Manage an OverbiteAre you unhappy with the way that the teeth of your upper and lower jaw line up? If so, you might have a bite issue, one of the most common of which is an overbite.

An overbite occurs when the upper teeth protrude out over the lower teeth substantially. Otherwise known as malocclusion, an overbite can leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile, but there are treatments to help.

What Caused Your Overbite?

There are several causes for an overbite. The most common is the size and/or shape of the teeth or jaw. You might have too much room within the jaw area or too little room to accommodate the size of your teeth. If not treated, the overbite could cause problems with the spacing of the teeth, and complications may include:

•  Jaw pain
•  Headaches
•  Worn tooth enamel
•  Gum disease
•  Cavities
•  Pain while eating
•  Difficulty fully closing or opening the mouth
•  Trouble speaking
•  Sleep apnea

Left untreated, an overbite can also change your facial structure and overall appearance.

How Can You Treat It?

There are a few treatment options available in order to correct an overbite. The most common is orthodontics, which may include braces with elastic bands to correct the positioning of the jaw. This is especially helpful among younger children, as their jaws have not fully developed.

Severe overbites sometimes require a tooth extraction. This will allow other teeth to move into place more easily. Other oral surgeries may be warranted in cases of extreme bite correction, especially if you suffer from jaw problems as a result.

If your overbite is causing problems in your life, it is important to give us a call to discuss your options. The same is true if your child has an overbite, as early treatment is crucial for best results. We look forward to speaking to you!
